WHY KIRKWOOD
For 37 years Kirkwood has provided Bay area skiers a unique experience among its Tahoe competitors: more snow, better snow, world renowned terrain and no crowding both on and off the mountain. It attracts a more passionate soul, those who place their mountain experience well ahead of off-mountain amenities, and prefer the intimacy and beauty of our high alpine valley. Skiing families love Kirkwood, as kids can enjoy the freedom of the mountains with everything a short walk away. And of course, this spectacular home is one of but a few dozen homes in the High Sierra located right on the mountain.

RESORT LOCATION

Kirkwood via Scenic Route 88 is closer to many Northern California cities than most major resorts.
Because Highway 88 is the least traveled of the three major highways to the High Sierra the other two being Highways 50 and 80 it is often considered a longer drive. As you can see from this mileage chart, Kirkwood is actually closer than most major resorts, and from the greater South Bay area, substantially closer, well over an hour when just a small amount of traffic is considered. But as most savvy Tahoe area skiers know, the renowned traffic jams on 50 and 80 often add hours to the commute coming and/or going. It is not uncommon after peak weekends or holidays for Kirkwood guests to arrive home 3-5 hours earlier than those departing the Tahoe basin. |
FUTURE GROWTH
What is good today will become great tomorrow. As Kirkwood adds more opportunities for ownership and attracts more guests on a daily basis, it has approval to add more lifts and terrain to dramatically outpace the increase in attendance. When Kirkwood is fully developed (likely to take the better part of the next two decades) it will have added 40% more skiers-at-one-time; during this same period (in all practicality, well ahead of the real estate development pace), the resort will add 70% more lift capacity and 100% more lift served terrain. So, an experience today that is well known for a near absence of lift lines or trail crowding, will actually become even more wide open over the next two decades. How many top resorts across the nation can make that statement? Few, if any; virtually all the increases in real estate development and skier-at-one-time attendance at Tahoe’s other major resorts has resulted in dramatic increases in lift lines and trail density, as growth in these areas has not kept up with daily demand.

SNOW AND TERRAIN

While passionate skiers often debate who has the best trail system, steepest slopes, longest runs and more, one thing is never up for debate: Kirkwood provides the Tahoe region’s deepest and light snow, rated #1 by every major ski publication for over 30 years. It’s a simple fact: due to Kirkwood’s location in the Sierra and its lofty elevation 1,600 feet above Lake Tahoe our snow is deeper and softer every day. When Kirkwood’s terrain is stacked up against Tahoe’s best, those same publications have only ranked one other resort in the top 10 in North America, ever: Kirkwood and Squaw Valley. No one else has been close.
